MAYFAIR. Located in a bustling mish-mash of labyrinthine streets, this pleasant eatery provides an upscale, almost cosmopolitan, glimpse at Lebanese cuisine. The restaurant – whose name comes from a 9th-century palace in Grenada, Spain – occupies a historic building and features an elegant decor, highlighted by fresh-cut flowers and greenery. Of course, the cuisine is nothing short of unforgettable, thanks to traditional dishes like falafel, houmous and famous homemade bread. Al fresco seating is available during warmer seasons. MAYFAIR. Featuring dishes such as baked ground meat with crushed wheat, stuffed with minced meat, pine nuts and onions, seabass in a spicy sauce, and maloukhia with rice and chicken, this cozy corner eatery in Shepherd Market has garnered quite a loyal following. Shoppers in particular laud Al Sultan for both its strategic position between Park Lane and Bond Street and its healthy fare and friendly service. The restaurant's subtle decor ensures that the focus is on the food, and you'll want to save room for dessert, because the Lebanese coffee and homemade pastries are not to be missed. TUBE: Green Park

KNIGHTSBRIDGE. Offering a taste of Arabia in Knightsbridge, Ishbilia is a particular favorite with area business people, who impress clients with the friendly setting, good service, and delicious food. Daily specials include molukhieh (a stew of molukhieh leaves, chicken or lamb, coriander, and garlic served on a bed of rice), bamia (okra, meat, fresh garlic, and coriander in tomato sauce), and sheikh mehshi (baby aubergine stuffed with lamb, pine nuts, and peppers). On weekends, Ishbilia features belly dancing and live music. TUBE: Knightsbridge

ISLINGTON. Folks in Islington stand ready to heap proverbial laurels on this regal Ottoman eatery. Spacious, relaxed, and boasting the feel of an Old World cafe, Iznik invites patrons to settle in for a meal of grilled lamb, stuffed aubergines (eggplant), and Mediterranean vegetable skewers. Of course, Turkish sensibility requires that you stick around for homemade pudding and coffee. Just be careful – Turkish coffee is famously charged with caffeine. TUBE: Highbury & Islington

MARYLEBONE. A basement eatery hidden away on Wigmore Street, Levant seems a world away from its bustling Marylebone setting. Dramatically decorated with Eastern Mediterranean and North African influences, the place evokes a bazaar, complete with Moroccan lanterns, a stylish bar, and beautiful belly dancers. Levant's well-conceived fare scarcely takes a back seat to its posh atmosphere, thanks to traditional Lebanese dishes like pan-fried salmon marinated with pomegranate, almond-coated squid, and falafel. KNIGHTSBRIDGE. This restaurant is part of a chain whose popularity has only increased since the first one opened in 1981. Lebanese-inspired fish and seafood dishes garner the largest headlines, but mezze, mellow fuul, and generous salads also have devotees. Maroush's late hours make it a popular destination for folks heading home after a night of clubbing. TUBE: Knightsbridge

BELGRAVIA. Back in the '70s, London-by-way-of Beirut restaurateurs Nader Bou and Jean Paul Bou Antoun had an idea that eventually resulted in this family of stylish Middle Eastern restaurants. Today, folks who tarry in Belgravia and Mayfair thank their lucky stars for the brothers' inventiveness. Indeed, Noura allows diners to sample everything from hot Lebanese sandwiches and mezzes to mixed grill platters and homemade baklava in a setting that's at once traditional and contemporary. KENSINGTON. Oh-so-stylish Pasha is a brilliant combination: exotic, authentic décor and traditional Moroccan food, enhanced by the scents of spices and incense, warm service and even the occasional belly dancer. The setting is striking, with yards of artfully draped red silks, hand carved furniture and atmospheric lighting. But the food is just as stunning. Popular dishes include tagines and couscous plates; "feasts," multi course set menus, are as well. There is a nice selection of wines from Morocco, Lebanon and Greece, plus an extensive cocktail menu. Perfect for either a romantic date or a night out with friends.

WATERLOO. The Ottoman Empire meets Waterloo at this chic Turkish restaurant, which attracts more than its fair share of well-heeled tourists and sophisticated business types. The stark, gallery-like decor imparts cutting-edge appeal, while friendly service and spacious seating make dining a pleasure. A healthy approach to cooking makes good-value dishes like grilled lamb, fish seasoned with coriander, and fresh squid with green lentils and chickpeas even more appealing. TUBE: Southwark
