In the sixth century, St. Columb built a monastery in what is now the city of Derry. Reportedly, St. Augustine's Church was constructed on the same site where this monastery once stood. The original church, which most likely was the place of worship for English settlers in the 17th century, was replaced in 1872 by the current version.
