Derry is the only completely walled city in Ireland. During the 17th century, the walls were built by English settlers as a defence of the city with four gates, Bishop's Gate, Ferryquay Gate, Butcher Gate and Shipquay Gate. Three more gates were added later. Today you can take tours of the city walls to learn about the famed 'slamming of the gates' to Catholic troops by some apprentice boys in 1689, and the subsequent human disaster that followed due to disease and starvation. You'll pass the headquarters of the present commemorative Apprentice Boys, will have fine views of the Catholic Bogside and Free Derry, as well as the 'peaceline' between traditionally Nationalist and Loyalist areas.
