Overview
Located right on the border in northwest Northern Ireland, Londonderry, or Derry, has endured centuries of fighting and turmoil. Frequent skirmishes between the Catholic majority and Protestant minority have only recently subsided in the twentieth century. Fittingly enough, the city is still fortified by thick, seventeenth century walls that have withstood numerous attacks, most notably the Great Siege of 1689 by King George. Derry's seventeenth century layout is also intact, with the Diamond center leading out to four main gateways: Bishop's Gate, Ferryquay Gate, Shipquay Gate, and Butcher's Gate. Visitors should check out the Gothic St. Columb Cathedral in the historic center, as well as the Guildhall just outside the city walls. Nearby lie the scenic Sperrin Mountains, the beach at Magilligan Strand, and Ballyarnet, which is where Amelia Earhart made her historic landing in 1932.
