About Long Island Attractions & Activities
Folks who never venture beyond Shea Stadium, Flushing Meadows, LaGuardia or JFK may find it difficult to believe the Island is far more than an upscale suburb of New York City, a wealthy bedroom community dissected by the LIE. Long Island's South Shore, thanks to the soft white sands of Fire Ireland, Jones Beach, and Long Beach, features some of the finest beaches on the East Coast (perhaps even the entire US), and though the waters of the Atlantic can be chilly, it doesn't deter swimming or surfing throughout the summer. The more pastoral eastern end of the Island, which includes the North and South Forks of Suffolk County, is revered for its world-class vineyards, golf courses, and unparalleled saltwater fishing. The Island's cliffy North Shore has long held appeal for the nation's rich and famous (Fitzgerald's Great Gatsby was set here), and curiosity about those times certainly draw big crowds to places like the Vanderbilt Museum and the Roosevelt Family's Sagamore Hill estate.
