SOUTHOLD. Long before the Dutch arrived and the whaling industry exploded, Long Island was inhabited by people of the Algonquin Nation. This North Fork museum preserves as much of that heritage as possible in exhibits of pottery, spearheads, tools, and fishing tackle. The facility also hosts lectures by scientists, scholars, and antiquarians who specialize in everything from archaeology to Native American art. Special visits to the museum during may be arranged in advance, and guided group tours are available on request.
