12. Elizabeth A. Morton National Wildlife Refuge

SAG HARBOR.   A Sag Harbor treasure for its rich diversity of wildlife and stunning natural beauty, this 180+-acre refuge was founded by the state in 1954, following a gift from Elizabeth Morton. Located between Noyack and Little Peconic Bays, the refuge is home to migratory and threatened/endangered birds – the piping plover, osprey, goldeneye, and oldsquaw, to name but a few – making it a favorite destination for birdwatchers. The landscape itself is worth a few snapshots too, given that a large portion of the refuge extends onto Jessups Neck, a peninsula whose shores are protected as nesting areas.   (© 10Best)

There is a $4.00 fee now but it is well worth the money and time to get here. You walk through the woods to see wildlife. They have 2 trails and both end up at the beach, where you can take a dip if you want (no life guards) or have a picnic. Last trip, I saw 6 deer in the meadow, bull frogs, turtles, chipmunks, and many many different kinds of birds. There is a bathroom at the main entrance for you to use.
