WEST SAYVILLE. For decades, the well-being of this South Shore town depended on the ocean, from the Great South Bay shucking industry to commercial fishing to whaling. This facility, located on Sayville's historic waterfront, preserves the city's maritime heritage with exhibits highlighting area wrecks and rescues, ship models, and the rise and fall of oyster harvesting. Also in the complex are the Edward Smith II Library and the 1890 Rudolph Oyster House, which is typical of the many oyster houses that lined the Great South Bay until the Great Hurricane of 1938. Minimum credit card purchase $10.
