1. Walt Whitman Birthday Celebration

The Buzz -- Held at the poet's birthplace, this celebration pays tribute to Whitman by encouraging excellence in poetry among young writers and building public appreciation of the art. Each year, winners of a student poetry contest, from 3rd to 12th grade, present their work, and a contemporary poet is honored as poet-in-residence. Former recipients of the award include Allen Ginsberg, Adrienne Rich and Billy Collins.
