MONTAUK. You couldn't ask for a more tranquil setting than the one this contemporary Italian-Med eatery boasts. Overlooking the lapping waters of Fort Pond, it features large picture windows and an herb and flower garden. Sunsets as seen from the restaurant (wine glass in hand, of course) are particularly stunning. Family-style service makes Harvest a terrific place for large groups, and the kitchen does its part to ensure that even the heartiest appetites are sated. Menu items range from grilled pizzas with gorgonzola, sausage, broccoli, and tomato to main dishes like pan-seared swordfish with spinach and beurre blanc or lamb T-bone with polenta and escarole. Reservations are accepted.

PORT WASHINGTON. Local folks thank their lucky stars for this cozy Northern Italian eatery, located near Port Washington Village and known for its innovative recipes and stylish food presentation. Indeed, the unassuming decor scarcely anticipates the kitchen's creative capacity and the place's professional servers. It's little wonder that La Piccola Liguria has achieved such a loyal following. A few tables offer especially lovely views of the water, so ask for one if you're looking to make a good impression on somebody special. Superb wine list.

HUNTINGTON. Piccolo is billed as delivering fabulous Italian fare with a heavy splash of American flair, but it's so much more than that. For starters, the dining room features contemporary decor and relies heavily on European influences, from its rich woodwork and mahogany bar to smartly appointed, candle-lit tables. From there, the impressive wine list and sterling menu steal the show, as do dishes like pan-seared striped bass with orange-ginger broth and Long Island duck with sun-dried cherry demi-glace. If you intend to impress, this is the place to do it. Reservations are strongly recommended.

HAUPPAUGE. Professional service and a formal atmosphere attract a business-oriented, high profile clientele. Clubby décor, from dark paneling to starchy white table cloths, accents the interior. Patrons marvel at the fabulous pastas, fish and veal that attest to the talent and longevity of the Vivollo family, who has owned and operated the restaurant since the 1930s. Satisfactory wine list. WATER MILL. Eponymous brainchild of LI restaurateur Robert Durkin, this Water Mill establishment is a special treat for the community's romantics. Charming country style sets the perfect stage for meals that pay tribute to Tuscan cuisine and wines. Indeed, Med influences and flavors permeate the menu, from a signature duck in vin santo (available seasonally) to roasted sea bass with white wine sauce or grilled venison loin with mashed potatoes and red wine reduction. Seating is somewhat limited, so reservations are encouraged, especially on weekends.

ROSLYN. Located where Bryant and Northern cross, Trattoria Diane has a colorful, upscale atmosphere that recalls the lively bistros you run across in Northern Italy's charming villages. The menu takes its cues from that same tradition, and its seasonal courses are sure to sate even the most discerning palates. Perhaps more jaw-dropping than the dinner fare are sinful desserts, skillfully made from scratch on the premises (there's an affiliated bakery next door.) Reservations are accepted.

LYNBROOK. White linens, intimate tables, soft lighting, and unique artwork set the stage at this refined, European-styled restaurant. At Villa Borghese, patrons are pampered to no end, both with topnotch service from the professional waitstaff and by the sublime dishes created by the accomplished kitchen. A terrific wine list adds just the right punctuation mark to such fine dining. Dinner reservations are a must, because seating is limited.
