GREAT NECK. Looking for a rustic setting wherein you can devour a mammoth porterhouse and munch on fried potatoes? This time-honored steak place is perfect. Remember not to ask for a menu, though, because they're reserved only for tourists of the most naive kind. Luger's makes dining simple by serving only one cut, the porterhouse, but they do it extremely well! The gift shop offers Luger's popular sauce and souvenirs, and it does accept credit cards.

ST. JAMES. Topnotch service, terrific wines, and first-rate steaks are hallmarks of this St. James gem, located near the southern terminus of Stony Brook Harbor. The dining room sports the look of an upscale hunting lodge, courtesy of amber-hued hardwood floors, mahogany paneling, rustic oil paintings, antique guns, and taxidermy items. Meanwhile, the kitchen dazzles with Kobe beef, lamb chops, and fresh seafood, which are coupled with inventive side dishes. Reservations are suggested.

ISLIP. Suffolk County's southern shore boasts a number of upscale restaurants, but few can be spoken about in the same breath as this sophisticated steakhouse. The setting itself is stunning: a restored bank building with white columns and a dining room with 32-foot ceilings, elegantly decorated with historical photos and Art Deco friezes. What's more, the bank's old walk-in vault now holds wines rather than money. What does your currency buy at Tellers? Fine American cuisine with an emphasis on local seafood and steaks – like steak au poivre, chateaubriand, Tellers Delmonico, live Maine lobster, and Long Island duckling. Reservations are a must.

ROSLYN. Housed in a cozy building on Middle Neck Road, this ambitious steakhouse has been making waves in LI culinary circles since it opened in 1986. Outfitted to recall the opulence of a '20s-style supper club, Bryant & Cooper is all class: from smartly clad servers to crisp linens and original artwork. The cuisine has earned more than its share of acclaim, thanks to dishes like a hearty porterhouse, lamb chops, and prime rib. They come accompanied by sides for two, like Lyonnaise potatoes, sautéed string beans, and broccoli hollandaise. Reservations are strongly encouraged.

GREAT NECK. One of the best reasons to visit Great Neck is Burton & Doyle, whose spacious, upscale digs invite folks to gather with friends and family for some of LI's most superbly done slabs of red meat. The dining room is dressed in old-fashioned, Gatsby style: muted lighting, dark mahogany, and comfortable leather. Without question, steaks are the headliners, and diners get to choose from porterhouses, sirloins, filets, and veal – all the most choice cuts. Pastas and fresh seafood provide alternatives for those not feeling particularly carnivorous. Reservations are encouraged.

HAUPPAUGE. Made for meat-lovers, this Hauppauge steakhouse (and its sister location in Port Jefferson) specializes in aged, tender-cut steaks marinated to perfection. The red-brick exterior may not make much of an impression, but the rich dining room does, thanks to white linens and an elegant, dinner club aesthetic. Each cut of meat is hand-selected from NYC's meat-packing district and treated to a magical house marinade. Every dish is also served with a Gibraltar-sized Idaho potato and farm-raised vegetable sides. In addition, Pace's boasts an impressive wine list and tiptop waitstaff.

HUNTINGTON. Located in a quiet residential area of Huntington, Abel Conklin's offers cozy environs that recollect a '20s-era, members-only club. Paneling, hardwood floors, etched mirrors, and linen-dressed tables set the stage, and friendly, professional service ensures that everyone is properly attended to. The kitchen staff earns a special nod for consistently superb fare – like fresh broiled Maine lobster, garlic and herb-infused chopped steak, grilled center-cut pork chop with black currant glaze, and jumbo pan-seared filet mignon au poivre. Outdoor seating on the brick patio is available. Reservations are suggested.
