LONG BEACH. Long Beach denizens count themselves lucky to have this charming crêperie, where folks enjoy homemade "French pancakes" throughout the day. Stuffed with just about anything you can fathom – sausage, cheese, spinach, smoked salmon, cinnamon apples, tomatoes, and pepperoni – Fresco's crêpes are as versatile as they are scrumptious. What's more, Franco-inspired decor, contemporary but casual, provides the perfect environment for relaxing with a good cup of coffee or a glass of fine wine and chatting with close friends.

BABYLON. Contrary to what you may have read in Sunday school, all is not lost in Babylon. Its saving grace, in this instance, is sushi. Inside this inventive little eatery, the chefs are not afraid to experiment. This fact becomes apparent when you glance at the menu, which features colorfully-named items like the UFO Roll and the McRoll (don't worry, fastfood naysayers, it's made with mackerel!). Seating is limited, so it's best to arrive early, especially on weekends.

HAUPPAUGE. Made for meat-lovers, this Hauppauge steakhouse (and its sister location in Port Jefferson) specializes in aged, tender-cut steaks marinated to perfection. The red-brick exterior may not make much of an impression, but the rich dining room does, thanks to white linens and an elegant, dinner club aesthetic. Each cut of meat is hand-selected from NYC's meat-packing district and treated to a magical house marinade. Every dish is also served with a Gibraltar-sized Idaho potato and farm-raised vegetable sides. In addition, Pace's boasts an impressive wine list and tiptop waitstaff.

STONY BROOK. This lovely Victorian-style home offers as authentic a teatime as you'll likely find on Long Island. Guests enjoy traditional treats like homemade scones, finger sandwiches, chocolate-covered strawberries, and Devonshire cream. Quality English teas and professional service add to the place's appeal, making patrons feel as if they're headed to Notting Hill for an afternoon treat. In addition, Robinson's prepares terrific luncheons and delectable desserts. Twenty-four hour advance reservations are a must.

CARLE PLACE. Pay close attention as you're cruising down Old Country Road near Carle Place, or you'll likely drive right by this friendly roadside diner without a second glance. If that's the case, you've truly done your morning appetite a disservice, because the Ham and Eggery has been a Nassau County stalwart since before World War II. From hearty egg skillets prepared any way you like to Belgian waffles and French toast smothered in rich maple syrup, this little slice of Americana is sure to rank high on your list.

ST. JAMES. Topnotch service, terrific wines, and first-rate steaks are hallmarks of this St. James gem, located near the southern terminus of Stony Brook Harbor. The dining room sports the look of an upscale hunting lodge, courtesy of amber-hued hardwood floors, mahogany paneling, rustic oil paintings, antique guns, and taxidermy items. Meanwhile, the kitchen dazzles with Kobe beef, lamb chops, and fresh seafood, which are coupled with inventive side dishes. Reservations are suggested.

ROSLYN. Housed in a cozy building on Middle Neck Road, this ambitious steakhouse has been making waves in LI culinary circles since it opened in 1986. Outfitted to recall the opulence of a '20s-style supper club, Bryant & Cooper is all class: from smartly clad servers to crisp linens and original artwork. The cuisine has earned more than its share of acclaim, thanks to dishes like a hearty porterhouse, lamb chops, and prime rib. They come accompanied by sides for two, like Lyonnaise potatoes, sautéed string beans, and broccoli hollandaise. Reservations are strongly encouraged.

PORT WASHINGTON. Here, at one of Main Street's more serene dining spots, Mr. Yamaguchi and crew achieve gold medals from local critics for deliciously creative fare and laid-back attitude. Indeed, this is the type of place wherein folks find it easy to get comfortable and stay a while, taking in the authentic Japanese artwork and enjoying handmade sushi and sashimi prepared at the oak bar. All dishes are artfully composed, from broiled eel with kabayaki sauce to Chilean sea bass marinated in soy bean paste. Reservations are suggested.

MASSAPEQUA. Billed as the area's "Home of Southern Food and Moonshine," this down-home restaurant brings a bit of the bayou to Long Island. Colored lights, plank-wood walls, and jazzy photos and posters give the place the look and feel of a Bourbon Street brasserie. Menu highlights include blackened steak, pan-fried catfish with mushroom-scallion cream sauce, and the intimidating Pete's Pit BBQ Combo: pulled pork, beef brisket, and andouille sausage with sour cream and chipotle salsa. So be sure to bring your appetite, mes amis, because they'll be serving in grand style! NB Jazz brunches on Sundays and live music on Friday and Saturday nights.

10. Burton & Doyle Steakhouse

GREAT NECK. One of the best reasons to visit Great Neck is Burton & Doyle, whose spacious, upscale digs invite folks to gather with friends and family for some of LI's most superbly done slabs of red meat. The dining room is dressed in old-fashioned, Gatsby style: muted lighting, dark mahogany, and comfortable leather. Without question, steaks are the headliners, and diners get to choose from porterhouses, sirloins, filets, and veal – all the most choice cuts. Pastas and fresh seafood provide alternatives for those not feeling particularly carnivorous. Reservations are encouraged.
