I had visitors from New Zealand staying with me who wanted to visit Chinatown. We arrived at the Empress for lunch at 2:10. They close at 2:30. The waiter would not give us a menu, nor a cup of tea. My friends were vegetarian. We begged for a vegetable dish or even some plain rice. They threw a plate of greasy asparagus at us and then all the help sat down to dine on a feast of everything. I wasn't about to tip a waiter who refused us a menu, and he commented on this in an obnoxious manner. My guests were bewildered to say the least and I hate to think what they will tell their friends in New Zealand about the way they were treated here.
