Los Angeles Guide » More About Los Angeles: Neighborhoods
Neighborhoods
- BEVERLY HILLS: One of the most famous cities in the US for shopping, dining, and an amazing display of wealth and style. Beverly Hills is bordered by downtown Hollywood to the east and the 405 freeway to the west. The area boasts some of the most ultimate sightseeing stops, including Rodeo Drive, and it adjoins the ultra-luxe neighborhood of Bel Air. Any trip to LA should include a visit here.
- CHINATOWN: The first American Chinatown planned and owned by Chinese immigrants, this vibrant LA neighborhood has grown into a charming collection of businesses and residences. In addition to lively retail markets and restaurants, the neighborhood hosts fun events like the Chinese New Year celebration in February, a summer film festival, and a weekly farmers market. A good place to start your visit is the Historical Society and Visitors Center (411 and 415 Bernard St), where you can obtain maps and info on the area. Take the Metro Rail gold line to the Chinatown station at College and Spring Streets.
- HOLLYWOOD ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT: Centered around Sunset, Wilshire, and Melrose. Home to one of the most famous signs in the world, Hollywood represents style and fashion, arts and culture to millions of people. Places of interest include Griffith Park, the Hollywood Entertainment District, the Hollywood Wax Museum, and the Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau. Popular dining spots are easy to find, and for great shopping, visit the Farmer's Market and Universal CityWalk. Famous streets for a great walking tour include Melrose and Hollywood Boulevard.
- LITTLE TOKYO: Social, cultural and economic center of Southern California's Japanese community. The twenty-one-story New Otani Hotel, the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center, and the Japanese American National Museum attest to the area's vitality. Four shopping centers contain restaurants and shops.
- MALIBU: West of LA proper, this gem sitting on the shore of the Pacific Ocean is famous for its lavish homes, celebrity spottings, and beautiful stretches of beach. Highlights of this hyper-trendy SoCal region include the famous Pacific Coast Highway, the J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Old Topanga Canyon Boulevard, one of the most scenic drives in the LA area. Great dining spots are prominent too. Plan to spend an entire afternoon exploring the PCH and stopping off at some of the most upscale shopping centers on the coast. And be sure to bring a camera. Numerous pull-off areas provide terrific vistas of the rugged California coast – these are sights you’ll never want to forget.
- MELROSE: A walk down Melrose offers the best glimpse of this vibrant city's styles, cultures, and people. The famous street is also home to some of the city's hottest restaurants, trendiest fashion houses, and best walking tours. The street connects downtown to Beverly Hills and cuts through Hollywood and West Hollywood. It's an absolute can't-miss for travelers seeking a true taste of LA's glam.
- SANTA MONICA: Located west of downtown near the Pacific Ocean, Santa Monica is the stomping ground of everybody from beach bums and fitness nuts to super models and silver screen sensations. The area is also home to world-famous Sony Studios, where the likes of Columbia and TriStar "can" dozens of the cinema industry’s top blockbusters each year. The great weather, the beach, Promenade, Palisades Park, Santa Monica Pier, star-studded restaurants, and great shopping highlight this region of Los Angeles. Retail venues include Santa Monica Shopping Mall, Third Street Promenade and Montana. This is one of the better places to see and be part of the scene in LA, so don't be surprised if you find yourself standing in line or sitting at a red light alongside your favorite celebrities.
- VENICE: Tourists from all over the world flock to this well-known locale and film backdrop. Some unusual performers (including chainsaw jugglers, fortune tellers, street artists, musicians, and tattooed weight lifters) set up shop here to vie for your dollars. Rent a pair of in-line skates, a bike, or a motorized scooter, and "cruise" the walk, but be sure to keep an eye out for the guy who walks on broken glass. It's a sharp act that your tires might not appreciate! Be sure to make a side trip to Abbot Kinney Boulevard, where a bevy of trend-setting shops awaits.
- WEST HOLLYWOOD: Bordered by Sunset to the north and Melrose to the south, east of Beverly Hills and west of downtown Hollywood, this neighborhood fuses high-glam fashion, culture, nightlife and entertainment into one, and is home to Sunset Strip, one of the most well known streets in the US. Also houses an array of great art and design galleries. Is a must-see for the Los Angeles traveler. The shopping is just fab!
