BEL AIR. With its inviting fireplace, cozy environs, and baby grand piano, the bar at the Hotel Bel-Air is definitely not for heavy partiers. Indeed, a more sophisticated and welcoming atmosphere would be hard to find in the city. Whether you're dining at the Bel-Air or not, the lounge is always a terrific place to frequent for aperitifs or for after-dinner drinks. Live piano music played nightly helps create just the right atmosphere, too.

EAST HOLLYWOOD. Polynesian drinks and Hawaiian shirts abound at this tiny bar. Although small on space, it's big on fun. Enjoy a dynamic crowd and the large selection of fruit drinks. For something deliciously different, try "Ray's Mistake" – a mistake that went terribly right! Keep your eyes peeled as the rich and famous have been known to enjoy Tiki Ti right alongside commoners.

WEST HOLLYWOOD. The lobby lounge of this Sunset Strip institution attracts an equal mix of celebrities and star-gazers; both are drawn to the gracious, expansive room with its arched windows and beamed ceiling. Surprisingly comfortable couches invite you to sit for a spell, and attentive servers and soothing piano music make sure you do just that. The bar and restaurant are nearby, should you decide to change venues, but many patrons are happy to stay put and keep an eye on the scene.

EAGLE ROCK. Designed to evoke a cozy ski lodge, The Chalet attracts a mixed crowd of Oxy students and neighborhood hipsters who snuggle up in booths and sip cocktails at the candlelit stone bar. Appropriately, a fireplace warms the scene, and while you won't find live music, a superb, eclectic mix of indie and alternative rock spills from a much-tended jukebox. Cheesy artwork somehow ups the cool factor, and everyone can enjoy the lack of a cover charge.

HOLLYWOOD. No need to pack your bags for a trip to this impossibly hip, airport-themed club – just bring your best moves, and dress to impress. Lines are notoriously long to enter the celebrity hangout, but those who do gain entrance agree that the modern, sleek decor and seamless mix of hip-hop and house are worth the wait. Check out the serene jellyfish tank and airplane window-shaped mirrors before hitting the dance floor; co-owner DJ AM and other celebrity spinners provide the tunes.

LA CIENEGA CORRIDOR. Rubbing shoulders with Hollywood's elite is a given here, so play it cool as you sip sake at this hopelessly hip lounge. Whether you're having a few cocktails before tucking into some of the city's finest (and most expensive) sushi or just chatting with friends over drinks, it's difficult to find a venue more elegant in its simplicity than Koi's lounge. Low banquettes in muted earth tones line both sides of the rectangular room, and long, unadorned wooden tables, lit by candles, provide a place to rest your drink. Coral-colored ottomans allow more folks to join your table and get the evening going. Equally appealing front and back patios provide even more space for lounging and imbibing.

HOLLYWOOD. Offering Balinese-themed sensory overload, this ultra-hip club attracts young Hollywood and crowds of star-gazers. Nationally-renowned DJs take over the booth most nights and keep the dance floor full of gorgeous guys and girls. Hip-hop, R&B, and rap are the genres of choice. Meanwhile, singles on the prowl congregate at the stunning wooden bar, lit by candles and accented by Balinese carvings. Queue early and get ready for a unique evening.

CULVER CITY. Dedicated to bringing jazz to the public in a relaxed, no-frills venue, this non-profit organization has been hosting some of the finest names in jazz for more than a decade. Situated in an old bakery, the place features a small cafe in the lobby where beer, wine, and champagne can be purchased and brought into the theater. Local and national acts alike have graced the stage, including performers like Diana Krall, Mose Allison, and Mark Murphy. A haven for jazz connoisseurs.

SANTA MONICA. Guitar shop by day, intimate live music mecca by night, McCabe's is one of metro LA's best bets. The decor is stripped down and basic – folding chairs and a makeshift stage – and no alcohol is served, but you really won't mind. The list of past performers is amazing and eclectic – Tom Waits, Cowboy Junkies, They Might Be Giants, Robyn Hitchcock, Bob Mould, Arlo Guthrie, Shawn Colvin, Ray Manzarek, T-Bone Burnett, Nerissa & Katryna Nields, Liz Phair, Mose Allison, Michelle Shocked, Richard Thompson, Evan Dando, Linda Ronstadt, John Lee Hooker, Vince Gill, and Tom Paxton, to name but a few. The first Sunday of each month is open mic night, and family-friendly performances are often scheduled.

10. Comedy & Magic Club

User Rating:  Rating: 5 / 5   (Rate It)

HERMOSA BEACH. There's no telling who might show up to do a set at this fun venue. In fact, patrons have suddenly found themselves listening to comedians like Robin Williams, Jerry Seinfield, Jim Carrey, and Gary Shandling and magicians like Harry Anderson. Jay Leno regularly makes a Sunday appearance, and you can also see variety acts featuring jugglers and mimes.
