8. Playa Santa Maria (Santa Maria Beach)

CORRIDOR.   A picturesque cove with a pink sandy beach, Playa Santa Maria is flanked on one side by the Hotel Twin Dolphin. The area is a protected wildlife sanctuary, so you're likely to see a plethora of creatures, from nearly-tame tropical fish to bold seabirds. The horseshoe shaped beach is popular with divers and snorkelers, and several companies offer guided trips. Weekends tend to be more crowded, but don't let that stop you.
