The Buzz -- Mexican Independence Day is celebrated every September, with the biggest events taking place on September 15-16. The time marks the day in 1810 when one Father Hidalgo tolled the bell of his church to rally supporters in a fight for independence from Spain, a battle that lasted ten years. Today's celebration starts the eve of the 15th with parties and dancing throughout the entire country. At 11pm, a local official (in Mexico City, it's the President) rings a bell and issues "el grito," a cry of "Viva Mexico!" This is followed by much cheering, a big display of fireworks, and partying well into the night. On the 16th, then, is a big parade, official speeches and more celebrating. This is widely considered to be the most important holiday in the country.
