More about Los Cabos
Los Cabos was a late bloomer. In the 16th century, the area was popular with pirates who came to steal pearls harvested from the Sea of Cortez; in the 17th and 18th centuries, Spanish missionaries established churches and began the difficult task of converting the native populace to Christianity. Even so, by the 1930s the population had swelled only to 400. Over the next forty years, that number tripled, as anglers discovered excellent marlin fishing and John Steinbeck published the "Log from the Sea of Cortez," detailing his voyage to study the area's ecology. It wasn't until the early 1970s that tourism in Los Cabos really exploded, however. In 1973 the Carretera Transpeninsular Highway rolled into town and made the area, for the first time, easily accessible. It was then that fun-seekers, lured by the prospect of 300+ sunny days a year, descended en masse. Surfers came seeking waves created by the confluence of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. Golf courses were built throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and the area became one of the world's premiere golf destinations. Today, there's no "average" visitor to Los Cabos, but almost everyone uses the same word to describe the area – paradise.
