EDITOR REVIEW: LYNCHBURG. Don't let the prospect of visiting a cemetery keep you away from this unique site, which features a beautiful butterfly garden, lotus pond, and 19th-century rose garden. In addition to gardens, the Taylor Street address (which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places) is the final resting ground of numerous Confederate soldiers. From 1806 until around 1855, the Old City Cemetery was also the only Lynchburg burial ground open to African-Americans. The site features, too, the Pest House Museum (where Civil War-era smallpox research was conducted); a restored train depot; and a museum that chronicles the history of the hearse.
