About Lynchburg

In the 1760s, John Lynch built his home on a Central Virginia hill overlooking the James River and operated a ferry service for pioneers heading west into the Blue Ridge Mountains. From these humble beginnings sprang Lynchburg, a town now nearly 100,000 strong. By the time Lynchburg received its charter in 1786, it was already an important trade and cultural center in the Virginia Foothills. In 1806, Founding Father Thomas Jefferson began construction of his retreat, Poplar Forest, a few...
