Between 1973 and 1977, the Episcopalian church complex of Lyon was uncovered. Three churches and other structures were built here in the fourth century. Within the churches, many of the catechumen (novices) were taught the St. Etienne baptistery. Even the baptismal tank and remains of Roman monuments can be seen today. Much of the history of this area can be studied from these wonderful preservations of the past. METRO: Vieux Lyon Although most of the houses in old Lyon are from the Renaissance or Gothic periods, there is one house that is an exquisite example of Roman architecture. Located at place Saint Jean, the Manécanterie is one of the oldest parts of the church buildings excavated at the Jardin Archéologique St. Jean. Note the columns with sculpted capitals and the alcoves under the arches. During the 14th and 15th centuries, the cathedral choristers lived here.
