5. Le Gros Caillou (The Great Stone)

Located at the end of the Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse is Le Gros Caillou (The Great Stone). Shrouded in myth, the stone has been rumored to be the heart of a bailiff that was turned to stone as a means to get even by the people who had been wronged by him. Geologists speculate that the rock was left behind after the Ice Age during the Jurassic period. Discovered by tunnel workers in 1890. METRO: Croix-Rousse   (© 10Best)
