Dating back to the 12th century, this massive hotel is one of the true landmarks of Lyon. It is evidence of the tradition of hospital care in Lyon and was actually a model for hospitals throughout France and even Europe. The treatment of patients here earned Lyon the name "City of Charity." Distinguishing features are the long façade on the Rhône embankment and its dome. In 1779, it was expanded by J.G. Soufflot, the architect who also built the Pantheon in Paris.
