6. Les TraboulesCroix Rousse District, Saint Jean District, Lyon, FR

Often used by escapees and protestors looking to hide, the traboules were a system of short cuts designed to make life easier in the Vieux Lyon district. Although their design was intended to be purely functional for ease of travel, this network of paths was used by many people looking for a place to hide during the religious persecution, the Revolution, and by resistance fighters during World War II. Today, the traboules not only offer an easier way around, but also seem to lead the onlooker into many of the more quaint parts of Lyon, a city noted for its secretive way of life.
