7. Opéra de Lyon

Built on the exact spot where Soufflot built his theatre in 1756, J.M Pollet and A.M. Chenavard designed the Opéra de Lyon. This 1,200-seat hall is now lined with black wood enhanced with gold and has maintained much of its original integrity. Although the only remains of the original structure are the four façades and the foyer, the original decor, as you would imagine, resembled that of a Greco-Roman temple. Today, it is an eighteen-level building with stacked balconies and a vaulted glass superstructure on the upper six levels.
