- VILLEURBANNE: Villeurbanne is over 2,000 years old. The city first began around 50 BC, when Roman citizens fleeing nearby Vienne settled a new city called Villa Urbana, or “City House.” Located on the right bank of the Rhone River, the modern Villeurbanne is one of the metropolitan areas forming the urban agglomeration of another Roman-established city, Lyon, which is also very accessible to visitors. Villeurbanne has had its share of growth and industry, starting with dyeing, metallurgy, and engineering in the industrial revolution and continuing today with leather and chemical production. In addition, France’s first Gratte-Ciel, or skyscraper, was built here in the 1930’s by architect Môrice Leroux. Other attractions include St. Athanase, used as a place of worship since 695 AD, and Théâtre National Populaire, which hosts performances by national touring companies. Villeurbanne also offers trendy and diverse neighborhoods, such as Bon-Coin, Croix-Luizet, and the popular Tonkin area.
