The permanent exhibition of the National Museum of Natural Sciences is divided into four sections. The History of Life and the Earth has magnificent fossils and dinosaur skeletons, dominated by the enormous reproduction of a diplodocus. Its modest open-air rock garden displays fossilized tree trunks and ancient rocks from the Madrid province. Mediterranean Nature and Civilization has thousands of examples of flora and fauna. The section entitled the Royal Cabinet is the private collection of King Carlos III, including various minerals, skeletons and stuffed animals. The north wing of this large building is given over to temporary exhibitions, which tend to be more modern and interactive in concept than the permanent exhibits.
