This magnificent palace, mausoleum and monastery complex took 21 years to complete. Philip II, King of Spain, was the visionary behind the project. Library houses an impressive volume of important documents, and there is also a noteworthy collection of paintings, sculpture and furniture. Restored to its former condition in 1979. 1 hour by train/bus. Metro: Trains daily from the main stations in Madrid, buses leaving every hour from Moncloa metro station.
