CENTRO. Majestic triple-arched entrance makes this one of Madrid's definitive monuments. Established in 1611 by the wife of Felipe III, this was formerly annexed to the Royal Palace via an underground passageway. A tragic fire resulted in the interior undergoing an extensive renovation in 1767. The site of numerous artistic treasures. Metro: Ópera or Santo Domingo

El Escorial was built following Spain's victory in San Quntin (1557). This magnificent palace, mausoleum and monastery complex took 21 years to complete. Philip II, King of Spain, was the visionary behind the project. Library houses an impressive volume of important documents, and there is also a noteworthy collection of paintings, sculpture and furniture. Restored to its former condition in 1979. 1 hour by train/bus. Metro: Trains daily from the main stations in Madrid, buses leaving every hour from Moncloa metro station. Reservations are essential for the guided tours of the Palacio and the Casita. Book at least 24 hours ahead.

CENTRO. La Almudena, now known as Madrid's main cathedral, was planned hundreds of years ago, but its development was stunted by set-backs such as a Civil War bombing and insufficient funds. This cathedral, with its neoclassical exterior and geometrical, Cubist-like stained glass windows, finally opened to the public in 1993. It continues to be controversial, architecturally speaking, because of its unique mix of traditional and abstract styles. METRO: Ópera
