CONCORD. "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach..." wrote Henry David Thoreau in "Walden," his legendary account of the three years he spent living on the shore of this tree-flanked kettle pond. Now a designated National Landmark, Walden has a certain allure that calls out to lovers of literature and philosophy, and it's not uncommon to find people sitting on its banks, lost in thought and book in hand. The park features a reconstruction of Thoreau's home as well as bookstore, where you can find literature relating to area history as well as the latest word in environmentalism, conservationism, and a number of other "isms." Call ahead as park access is strictly limited to 1000 people per day.
