7. Richard Callahan State Park

Having grown up with this 800+ acre park literally in my back yard I have hours of enjoyment both riding, hiking, snow shoeing and x-country skiing. The trails have been well marked since becoming a park, but the trail map, which is sometimes available upon entering from one entrance, is barely readable. When this park was first given to the state in the 70's (I think), I had hopes for better footing on some of the trails. This has not happened, but in general the trails are well kept for all to enjoy. There is a wonderful area that dogs enjoy around a pond not far into the park at the Millwood entrance. This is pure doggie heaven for the socialized pups as they can chase balls and play at will. Many times there are 20+ dogs. All have a great time. I only wish the owners would venture further into the park, but then I wouldn't be able to enjoy as much peace and quiet.
