CONCORD. Home of the Alcott Family, Orchard House dates from the late 17th century. The house, which was originally two structures joined together by A. Bronson Alcott in 1858, was home to the Alcotts for twenty years. Author Louisa May Alcott not only used the house as the setting for her classic "Little Women," but also wrote the book in her bedroom in 1868. Orchard House has remarkable authenticity, as over 80% of the furnishings are original to the Alcotts, and extensive pains have been taken to preserve the home as the Alcotts occupied it. Also on the grounds is The Concord School of Philosophy, one of the most successful adult educational centers in America, begun in 1879 by Mr. Alcott.
