SUDBURY. Elegant yet unpretentious, the historic Longfellow Inn first opened to the public in 1716 as Howe's Tavern, a rustic little pit-stop along the old Boston Post Road. In 1862, poet Henry Longfellow visited the tavern and later published a book of poems entitled "Tales of a Wayside Inn," whose fictitious characters he based on people he met during his stay here. Today, guests may dine on traditional Yankee fare like their Wayside lobster pie, Boston scrod, and herb-encrusted Atlantic salmon. Afterwards, a drink or two – perhaps one of their famous Coow Woows – in the rustic Old Bar Room, whose fireside seating makes for a cozy setting during those blustery winter months. Reservations are suggested.
