Built in 1524, this former fortress, after a period of abandonment, became a state prison in the 17th century. Made famous by Dumas' "The Count of Monte Cristo," this castle boasts three towers and a drawbridge. Opened to the public following the prison's demise in 1890. Located on an island 2 kilometers (1 mile) SW from Vieux Port.
