LAHAINA. Hidden under the dusty red sand of Maluuluolele Park in Maui is an ancient secret. Here lies the remains of a royal compound where Princess Nahienaena and King Kamehameha III once ruled. Visiting Maluuluolele now may not seem like the most exciting of activities, but if you picture the old palace with a glittering, sacred pond, it can be. In 1918, the royal compound - mausoleum, artifacts and all - was destroyed to make the park that visitors see today.
