Being at the summit of Haleakala is like being on the moon, especially if you hike down into the surreal landscape of the Sliding Sands trail. Make sure to bring water with you, this is a remote trail! If you go up Haleakala for the sunrise, it is truly a spiritual experience. However, it's also a cold one! Temperatures at the summit are always about 30 degrees colder than at sea level, meaning it can be in the 30s or 40s pre-dawn. Dress warmly if you go, and bring hotel towels or blankets if you need extra protection from the chill. Another alternative is to go up for the sunset instead, when it will be warmer and far less crowded!
