6. Maricao State Forest

MARICAO.   Pack a picnic lunch and drive east from Mayaguez to enjoy a day of hiking and bird watching in this state forest. A rustic stone observation tower affords panoramic views of the forest and the sea, all the way to Mona Island. More than 50 species of birds live here including pigeons and hawks. Of the 280 tree species found in the forest, 38 are unique to this area. Hiking trails are well marked and there is a picnic area where you can rest and refresh yourself.   (© 10Best)
