MONA ISLAND. This remote island is often compared to the Galapagos for its untouched beauty and interesting flora and fauna. Iguanas up to three feet long roam freely and red-footed boobies are spotted sunning themselves on the shore. Tiny cactuses dot most of the landscape, but mangrove forests and honeycombed caves are also nestled on the 25 square mile island. Limestone cliffs 200 feet high are one of the most impressive features of this spot that is favored by nature-loving day-trippers, snorkelers and explorers. Camping can also be arranged for several dollars per night. Everything you need for your visit must be provided by you – it is a long, 45-mile swim back to Puerto Rico if you run out of fresh water! Contact the Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources for details about ferry crossings, camping reservations and general island information. (© 10Best) More Details for Mona Island
