  1. Over 60% of the tuna eaten in the United States was canned in Mayaguez, PR. Bumblebee and StarKist both have factories here.
  2. Mayaguez means "place of many streams" in the language of the native Taino Indians.
  3. Located 45 miles off the coast of Puerto Rico, Mona Island has been a sometimes hideout for pirates through the years. It is said that Captain Kidd and his gang spent some time on the island.
  4. The Juan A. Rivero Zoo, usually just called the Mayaguez Zoo is the only zoo on Puerto Rico.
  5. With a population of just over 100,000, Mayaguez is the third largest city on Puerto Rico behind San Juan, the island's capital, and Ponce.
  6. When you visit the Maricao Forest Reserve, keep an ear peeled for the tiny coqui frogs. These little guys are only found on Puerto Rico and you will recognize them by the sound they make – their call sounds like they are saying "coqui! coqui!"
  7. The nearby town of San German boasts the oldest standing church in the New World. Porta Coeli Church was built in 1606.
  8. The town of Rincon, to the north of Mayaguez, gained its reputation as a world-class surfing destination in 1968 when the World Surfing Championships were held here.
  9. The town of San German is the second oldest settlement in Puerto Rico. San Juan, specifically the Old Town, is the oldest.
  10. Mayaguez is 98 miles west of San Juan. It is the largest city on Puerto Rico's western coast.
