The city of Memphis has a rich and colorful history of which its citizens are deeply proud. From the site of the tragic assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. to the studio where country and rock legends recorded their first hits, you can practically taste the history on every corner in Memphis. One of the most popular attractions – and the most visited private home outside of the White House – is Elvis' former home, Graceland. The list of sites important to our country's musical history is never-ending, but there are a few that can't be missed. Sun Studios, where the musical genius of Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Elvis Presley all came together to create what we know as Rock n' Roll, offers daily tours and is still a functioning studio located on Union Avenue. One of the best ways to absorb the beat and feel of Memphis music is to take a stroll up Beale Street. Its sidewalks are lined with street performers and musicians, and the sweet sounds of the countless clubs and bars pervade the streets. For a different side of Memphis, be sure to visit the National Civil Rights Museum located at the site of King's assassination. For the kids, the Memphis Zoo is always a hit, as are the ducks at the Peabody hotel.
