About Memphis Shopping
As with most metropolitan areas in the New South, shopping in Memphis usually means shopping malls and lots of driving. Most of Memphis' malls and complexes are located on the east side of town including Oak Court Mall, an upscale complex decorated with Italian marble and bronze statues, and Wolfchase Galleria, with over 130 stores, a movie theater and one-of-a-kind carousel. Those looking for a more unique gift or simply to browse some local artwork should focus on downtown, where abandoned buildings have been replaced with trendy shops and galleries in recent years. The South Main Historic Arts District is full of art galleries displaying the wares of world famous and local artists. You will also find a number of eclectic restaurants and trendy shops housed in renovated warehouses. Another up-and-coming shopping neighborhood is Cooper-Young. The Memphis Antique and Design District is located on the Northern edge of the neighborhood and is home to the highest concentration of fine antique and decorative arts merchants in the Memphis area. However if you're looking to rummage through typical antiques shops, Overton Square is your best bet. For an inexpensive souvenir, head over to Beale Street's A. Schwab, a two story general store and Memphis landmark where you can purchase everything from kitschy home décor to overalls to key chains. -- Elizabeth Baxley, 10Best Editor
