DOWNTOWN.   Mississippi River Museum explores the 10,000-year history of America's most well-known river, noting how it developed and what the areas around it have drawn from the river. The museum also features the Memphis Belle, one of the famous B-17s that fought in World War II, and the Belle of the Bluffs, the reconstructed front half of an 1870s steamboat, complete with cotton bales stacked on the lower deck and water lapping at the hull. The Memphis Blues exhibit highlights the music of the Mississippi – blues, New Orleans jazz, early rock 'n roll, and Elvis. Mud Island's pay-one-price package includes entry to the museum, a round-trip monorail ride, and a guided tour of the five-block scale model of the Mississippi.   (© 10Best)

We had a wonderful experience on Mud Island. There is a great museum that explores the history of the lower Mississippi River, including information about the Civil War, disasters, engineering, and much more. I loved the fascinating five block long scale replica of the 1,000 mile lower Mississippi River from Cairo, IL to New Orleans. You walk along it and see every aspect of the river. 1.3 million gallons of water flows through it. Other attractions, besides a glorious view of Memphis, include a monorail ride to get to the island, and bicycle, kayak, and pedal boat rentals. There are resaurants that we did not try or you could bring a picnic lunch. We had a great day.
