Always Excellent
Lunch, dinner, or catered -- the Germantown Commisary is ALWAYS excellent. I can take business clients here anytime and they are sure to be impressed.

On the road, passing through Memphis so decided to look for highly rated BBQ in Memphis area. Sadly picked Germantown Commissary. This was a Sunday afternoon which may have something to do with it but I had difficulty finding anything good about the place. Ordered plate of pulled pork plus 1/2 a rack of ribs. Sent the ribs back after a bite or two. They were old and tough through and through. They did bring me an asked for plate of pulled to finish my meal. Even the pulled seemed dry to my wife and I. Looking for something to brag about, decided to order "delicious looking" deserts (choc pie and coconut cream pie) but even these were gooey and awful, tasting like cotton candy on steroids or something. It'll be Corkys for me next time I'm in town.

I was married 18 years ago in Memphis...my wife lived in G-town...her favorite bbq joint is Leonard's but when her family gathers they always get the bbq from the GC...seek it out.

Very good BBQ
They not only make great BBQ, but also great desert! Small, cozy, lots of character, and very good food. It's been there a long time, and there's a good reason for that. A very worthwhile BBQ spot in a city full of them.

The BBQ at the Germantown Commissary was fantastic, albeit not the best we had while in Memphis (we also tried Beale St's Pork with an Attitude and Corky's). However, the Commissary did have the best vibe of the three we tried. It's atmosphere was charming and off the beaten path, such that it catered more to the locals than the tourists. I'd put it on the must-try list for any BBQ afficionado.

Love, love, love The Commissary. My wife and I plus our friends and families have gone to many of the restaurants on this list, but The Commissary is by far the best bar-b-que you will eat in Memphis. Atmosphere is great, service is friendly, but the food is amazing. Best dry rubs around. Pulled pork shoulder is moist and smoky. The desserts...please. Everything they serve is just flat out delicious. Its just like the souvenir cup that you take home says, "So good, yu'll slap yo momma!"

Food and service was great. The coconut cream pie to "DIE FOR". Only restaurant in the Memphis area that we would say was 5 STARS and we ate LUNCH AND DINNER BY THIS WEBSITE.

I was on the Memphis Cue trail and after 6 BBQs in 8 hours, these guys rank #1 in my book. Loved the curb appeal, I showed up just before 11 a.m. on a Saturday morning with no one in the restaurant and decided to take a walk to look at the historic Germantown area and when I returned at 11 a.m. the place was filling up fast, so get there early! The ribs had a nice mahogany dry crust with a great sweet/spicy flavour that were moist, pink and pulled off the bone with a little resistance. The pulled pork was moist, pink layers under the nice chared crust pieces . The sauces and side of beans were good and I enjoyed the deviled egg on my creamy coleslaw. Service was fast and friendly and I am sorry I left the impression that I did not like my meal since I only ate 1/3, being at the start of my Cue marathon. My advice - GET THERE !!
