SOUTH BEACH. With its exotic atmosphere and Mediterranean-influenced menu, this restaurant and bar titillates the senses. The floor is covered in soft grass – yes, real growing grass – and the main dining area's Moorish aesthetic shines through in plush couches and a waterfall. Aphrodisiac martinis and a satisfying wine list hint at the range of beverages; food – should you desire it – includes filet mignon and a lobster napoleon. A great place to impress. Vallet parking: $20.

CORAL GABLES. Coral Gables' answer to the South Beach crush, this popular cafe is a veritable magnet for upscale young professionals on weekday evenings. The work day done, they gather for intriguing cocktails and socializing, eager to slough off the cares of necessity – after a quick stop-off at home to freshen up, of course. If food's in order, the menu offers appetizers, pastas, seafood, steaks and sandwiches. Live jazz adds to the ambience, and on Friday nights, the party even spills out into the streets – with police approval. Should you desire a VIP experience, the elegant Black Room is a members-only refuge.

SOUTH MIAMI. Take a step back in time at this appealingly nostalgic bar that still looks much like it did back in 1946. The interior may be slightly worn from more than 50 years of business, but that simply adds to the laid-back charm of the place. Locals love to meet here for martinis and conversation, with classics by Sinatra and friends playing on the well-stocked jukebox. Bargain-hunting bar-lovers will appreciate the frequent two-for-one drink specials. Fox's is also known for great pub grub, from French dips to burgers.

COCONUT GROVE. A Coconut Grove staple for well over 30 years, Monty's is all that vacationers (and residents) dream about: a waterside setting, soft breezes, incredible seafood, easy camaraderie and cold, potent drinks. Afternoons and evenings find work-weary folks newly invigorated by happy hour drink specials and picturesque views. The raw bar plies them with stone crab, oysters and clams while live bands keep rhythms up and patrons happy. Frozen drinks are a real treat, and you can even pull your boat up to the marina if you've been tooling about on the water.

SOUTH BEACH. One of Miami's few true Irish pubs, the Playwright is tucked away on Washington Avenue, right in the middle of the trendy SoBe night scene. The decor takes a page from the "all things Irish" catalogue, featuring a mahogany bar imported from the Emerald Isle; cherry mahogany tables and chairs; photos of Joyce, Yeats, Shaw, Wilde, and other great Irish penmen; and an 18th century pulpit and two spectacular stained glass windows reclaimed from an old church. Of course, Guinness freely flows, and the hospitable bartenders can mix together just about any poison you desire.

SOUTH BEACH. While a good portion of the SoBe nightscene is as much spectacle as it is substance, this 16th Street watering hole makes no bones about its intent. This is 100% bar – the type of place where you can enjoy a tall, cold pint of ale, friendly conversation, and perhaps some classic Stones or Dead playing in the background. Microbrews and hard-to-find European imports are available, but the Abbey's own house brews can give any of them a run for their money. Cigar smokers will find safe haven here, as well.

SUNSET. This relaxed neighborhood tavern offers lots of fun and great deals that make it a hit among a diverse range of locals. Perhaps the biggest draw is the live music that is featured on weekends. Top rock and alternative bands from around the region often play to a packed house. For football games, particularly if the Dolphins are playing, this is one of the best places to be, with rowdy crowds coming in for great deals on drinks and food. Happy hour at Scully's is known for its extensive free buffet, though a full menu is also available.

SOUTH BEACH. Mac's is fondly known as South Beach's premier dive bar. Barflies, trendy types, and drag queens mix and mingle at this simple nightspot, where rock and roll on the jukebox provides the only entertainment – other than people-watching, which is endlessly entertaining here. Casual wear is recommended, but people show up in all manner of attire, from cutoffs to cocktail dresses. Another claim to fame at Mac's is the cheapest beer in South Beach, served to you with no frills in a basic plastic cup. The consummate seediness of the bar has made it a favorite with those from all walks of life.

SOUTH BEACH. You know what you are in for as soon as you hear the name of this bar's most popular drink – the Call A Cab. Just about every alcoholic beverage is combined in this fruity concoction that often lives up to its name. There is a long list of sweet, slushy drinks, but they are far more potent than they appear. The lively crowd is diverse and friendly, and the view from the second-floor patio is one of the best. Grab a coveted spot here and watch the ocean and the action on Ocean Drive. ATM machines on the premises.
