DOWNTOWN. A cutting edge sound system and open floor plan make attending a concert at this rock club an awesome experience. Patrons may see the stage from different parts of the club, there's plenty of room to dance, and the decor, thanks to flashy colors and ornate chandeliers, enhances the space. A bar and furnished VIP areas are additional luxuries.

SOUTH BEACH. While the Van Dyke pulls in a cafe-society crowd of locals with its elegant menu, it also boasts terrific live jazz in its upstairs venue. A speakeasy-like ambience reigns, complete with rich fabrics, upholstered seating, and a beautiful oak bar. Sophisticated older couples often gather to enjoy the soothing stylings of quartets and vocalists, all the while nursing cocktails and nibbling on baked brie or prosciutto and melon. An intimate escape from SoBe's crush and the city's neon-and-pastel gloss.

LITTLE HAVANA. Small, cozy and the epicenter of Latin music in Miami, Hoy Como Ayer brings past and present together beautifully. Its name translates as "today as yesterday," and from the photos of legendary singers to Fuacata! (a weekly event that merges traditional tunes with electronic effects), the idea is at the club's forefront. The music's authenticity and high quality often provoke dancing, and big-name vocalists have been known to make surprise appearances. In addition, perfectly mixed mojitos fondly recall Cuba, and a brief menu of Latin foods maintains the pleasurable theme.

SOUTH BEACH. Stride into this smooth, sultry bar dressed to kill. Order a classic drink in a highball glass and take in the smoky, atmospheric surroundings. Live music is a rarity in South Beach, but this popular outpost has earned a reputation for putting on great jazz shows, with styles ranging from classic to acid. If you aren't enjoying the experimental performances downstairs, you can always head upstairs to the tiny loft, where DJs spin dance and house. Impromptu celebrity performances are a tradition at this unpretentious, laid-back lounge. Be sure to the Brazilian jazz show the last Thursday of every month.

COCONUT GROVE. A curious phenomenon in sunny South Florida, Mr. Moe's enjoys enormous popularity as a rustic, lodge-like sports bar. Lots of wood, stone, and western accents contribute to the overall effect, and dozens of flat-screen TVs offer a sleek counterpoint. People come throughout the week, staying late to watch sports, play pool, take in live music, and compete at trivia. Also available are karaoke and mechanical bull-riding. Tasty eats, including steaks and ribs, bolster the appeal, and many beers and hard ciders maintain the earthy, satisfying theme.

CORAL GABLES. A recent renovation has left this longstanding bar in top condition, ready to offer guests an evening of revelry or relaxation. The friendly, neighborhood vibe is immediately evident. This isn't one of those bars where you walk in and have your outfit inspected by a snooty crowd of cooler-than-thou types. Just walk in, play your favorite song on the fantastic jukebox (known for its diverse selection) and then grab your favorite domestic brew or perhaps a potent cocktail. If you're hungry, grab a booth and snack on satisfying pub grub. A great place to meet locals or fellow travelers. Live music on Saturday nights.

SOUTH BEACH. Experience the islands without leaving South Beach. You can't miss this place right on the water, where crowds bustle, music blares and tropical drinks are flowing. Enter the jungle-like atmosphere and you'll be amazed at the mural all over the building, which was painted by seven Haitian artists over a period of nine years. There's plenty of live music in the evenings; the cover varies according to the artist. Tasty Latin cuisine is served inside and outside, and there's a small dance floor. The spacious bi-level building accommodates big crowds, and the reggae and salsa music, along with scantily clad dancers, adds an exotic flair.

DOWNTOWN. If you're lost among the Brickell Avenue skyscrapers, just keep your eyes peeled for South Miami Avenue, and you'll soon stumble across this gritty, green cat dive. Miami's oldest watering hole, this groovy downtowner is a great place to wet your whistle with some ice cold brews or an expertly-mixed cocktail and enjoy the soothing sounds of old school jazz or blues. With a history that dates back over 90 years, this liquor bar has served such notables as Al Capone and B.B. King – most of them legally, of course. Today, Tobacco Road has gained fame for its awesome, homestyle ribs and speakeasy-like atmosphere. Live music nightly.

DOWNTOWN. Little Havana is crowded with great ethnic eateries, and this Spanish favorite is one of the best. The authentic décor, including colorful paintings, Spanish singers and flamenco dancing, transports you to foreign shores. The taverna-style ambience is backed up by traditional Spanish cuisine, including great tapas (try the fine manchego cheese and the garlic-sautéed shrimp), tasty paella and a broad range of filling tortillas. The well-stocked wine cellar offers the best vintages Spain has to offer, and there is also a separate room for buying and smoking fine hand-rolled cigars.
