SOUTH BEACH. In every sense, Nikki is a beach club, from its tiki bars and cabanas to its Survivor-meets-Fantasy Island decor. Awesome DJs spin top tunes constantly, and great global food makes for terrific nibbling. Plus, a never-ending parade of SoBe's famously beautiful models, society pagers and jetsetters ensures that standard goings-on never get stale. The campy vibe is irresistible, and excellent disco, lounge and dance music are certain to put you in a party mood.

DOWNTOWN. Located in the heart of downtown, this Italian gem is popular with those who do business at the main courthouse as well as those who have business there. La Loggia draws favor for its terrific, homestyle pasta dishes and its oft-packed happy hour (one of the only ones on Flagler Street). The beautiful waitstaff darts to and fro, making sure that each table is enjoying its hearty Northern Italian fare.

SOUTH BEACH. With its exotic atmosphere and Mediterranean-influenced menu, this restaurant and bar titillates the senses. The floor is covered in soft grass – yes, real growing grass – and the main dining area's Moorish aesthetic shines through in plush couches and a waterfall. Aphrodisiac martinis and a satisfying wine list hint at the range of beverages; food – should you desire it – includes filet mignon and a lobster napoleon. A great place to impress. Vallet parking: $20.

DOWNTOWN. For Cuban cuisine set to a pop beat, don't miss this cafe owned by singer Gloria Estefan and husband Emilio. Vivid colors, Latin beats, and plenty of bongos (of course!) get you in a festive mood, and the authentic Cuban cuisine is served with creative aplomb. Come early to enjoy a satisfying meal of roasted chicken marinated in orange and lime or the traditional Cuban strip steak. Wash it down with an exotic tropical drink, and then prepare to hit the dance floor, which starts hopping around 11pm. This is a great place to make a night of it. Reservations recommended.

SOUTH BEACH. Skybar's glamorous, welcoming spaces act as a magnet for the unabashedly chic and famous. From the gorgeous, dramatic Redroom, activity spills out the back door, into a lush garden, then to a poolside lounge, and finally to the beach itself. Accented with handcrafted lanterns, vibrant textiles, rich beading, tropical foliage and imported furniture, the lounge is designed to seduce – and it succeeds brilliantly. You'll quite possibly lose all sense of time and place.

6. Jazid

SOUTH BEACH. Stride into this smooth, sultry bar dressed to kill. Order a classic drink in a highball glass and take in the smoky, atmospheric surroundings. Live music is a rarity in South Beach, but this popular outpost has earned a reputation for putting on great jazz shows, with styles ranging from classic to acid. If you aren't enjoying the experimental performances downstairs, you can always head upstairs to the tiny loft, where DJs spin dance and house. Impromptu celebrity performances are a tradition at this unpretentious, laid-back lounge. Be sure to the Brazilian jazz show the last Thursday of every month.

7. Mansion

SOUTH BEACH. Ensconced in a former Art Deco theater, this club is as vast and conspicuous as its name. Boasting typical SoBe panache, it's dressed with grand arches, chandeliers, sweeping staircases, Venetian mirrors and ornate fireplaces, is awash in glamour, and observes a velvet-rope policy, so come dressed to impress. Inside, four dance floors thump with music across three levels, and nine bars handle thirsty patrons. Lounges and VIP areas also find plenty of traffic. Moreover, celebrities are common, the level of sociability is enormously high, and top DJs definitely spin to please.

8. Purdy Lounge

1811 Purdy Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33139 · 305-531-4622

SOUTH BEACH. Avoid the crowds on Ocean Drive and head to Purdy's, an off-the-beaten-path location with a loyal following. If the scene grows old or if you are simply not in the mood for the nocturnal fray, Purdy's offers just the antidote. The lounge has an appealing retro rec-room aesthetic – you'll think you've entered your best friend's basement circa 1975. (Think lava lamps, funky chairs and assorted board games!) Play some checkers, backgammon, or even good ole Connect Four as you enjoy a pleasant mix of music and some of the lowest drink prices around.

SOUTH BEACH. In a city known for great dance clubs and stellar music, this club stands apart from the competitive pack. Top DJs from around the world whip the beautiful crowds into pulsating frenzies, inundating them with trance, musica latina and house. Club kids show their appreciation with coolly confident dance moves. This cool, vibe-alicious space that was once an old Art Deco theater. VIP tables may be reserved by calling 786-281-4529.

DOWNTOWN. When Miami's top DJs rock downtown, nine times out of ten you'll find them at this 11th Street hotspot, a high-octane warehouse-turned-dance club that attracts more than its share of the SoBe hipster crowd. In the cavernous main room, where professional DJs with names like Roland and the Lizard Man keep the party going long after sunrise, you'll find 30,000 square feet of dance space, one of Miami's loudest sound systems, and a dazzling light show. An open-air patio at the rear of the club is a primo place to catch a little fresh air, escape from the music, and enjoy some chitchat with your most recent dancing partner.
