COCONUT GROVE. While the dining scene at Coconut Grove doesn't lack for its share of options, it's difficult for many tourists to find a place that serves up good food but doesn't wipe out the trust fund in the process. 27th Avenue's Las Culebrinas is one of these places. Live calypso and salsa music filters through the restaurant, whose sophisticated decor bears a distinct tropical lilt. Upstairs, patrons may sit at the upscale bar and enjoy a little bi-lingual interaction with the band. Meanwhile, the smartly clad waitstaff swarms around the main dining area, bringing delightful offerings of sautéed shredded beef and onions, fried pork in avocado sauce, and rabbit in garlic sauce with deep-fried green plantains. Reservations are accepted.

LITTLE HAVANA. Considered to be one of the best Cuban/Spanish eateries, this is Little Havana's most prestigious restaurant, and certainly one of the most romantic. Enjoy live entertainment, provided by strolling musicians, while you feast on exotic specialties. The menu is lengthy and impressive, featuring some of the most succulent pork dishes to be found anywhere. The mixed seafood grill is also a top-notch choice, and the international wine list is among the best in Miami. Linger over strong, fresh-brewed coffee and the sinfully delicious crema Catalana dessert. Reservations recommended.

PINECREST. This seafood specialist has been a mainstay in the South Miami area for nearly 30 years. The decor has a stylish seafaring theme, with dark wood and brick, dim lighting, nautical art and various other nautical antiquities on the walls. Saltwater aquariums are scattered throughout the dining room, offering plenty to look at as you await your feast. "Captain" Bill Bowers wants to make sure his clients go away completely satisfied, so he also offers an enormous variety of main courses for landlubbers, including steaks, lamb chops and chicken. But the fresh catch is still king. The wine list is legendary, featuring plenty of well-known wines as well as hard to find labels, all at attractive prices.

SOUTH BEACH. Cuban-inspired décor accents this striking dining room, adjoined by an outdoor terrace. A tasty ceviche made with shrimp, snapper and calamari and chilled oysters on the half shell lures diners to the raw bar, and the kitchen cooks up terrific steaks and seafood. The spiced Caribbean snapper with grilled plantains, chayote and black bean corn salsa comes highly recommended. Roasted Florida lobster tail, jumbo stone crab claws, char-grilled filet mignon and New Zealand lamb chops are the among other delicacies available. Live music nightly.

CORAL GABLES. Romeo Majano's forte is homestyle Northern Italian cuisine, and it's a solemn truth that he never fails to impress. After being seated in the cozy dining room, patrons are greeted in Old Country style by Chef Majano. He converses with them, gets to know their tastes and needs, and then creatively fashions a three-course lunch or six-course dinner tailored to each diner's tastes. The result is terrific, personalized food and a relationship with the chef that regulars find endearing. Prix fixe menu is $30 for lunch and $75 for dinner.

KEY BISCAYNE. With panoramic views of beautiful Biscayne Bay and the Miami skyline, the outdoor seating here is some of the most sought-after in town. Get into the spirit of the nautically themed dining room and order one of the seafood specialties. Shrimp scampi, soft-shelled crab, red snapper and simple seafood pastas aren't fancy, but they are fresh and delicious. Good steaks and salads, too. The fun atmosphere and spacious dining room make this a great place for a large crowd or a family.
