Overview
Middlesbrough was a small village on the River Tees before the Industrial Revolution, when the village's location inspired some Stockton businessmen to build a port for coal shipping. Before long, Middlesbrough was a city that thrived on the coal, steel, and iron industries. While some cities fell into disarray after industries left, Middlesbrough simply changed with the times and it is now home to many international businesses. Some of the city's past can still be revisited in such engineering feats as the Newport Bridge, which is the first vertical lift bridge in England, and the Transport Bridge. Middlesbrough is also the birthplace of celebrated explorer Captain James Cook, and the city has a museum dedicated to the history maker's adventurous life. Other attractions include the beautifully landscaped Albert Park, the University of Teesside, and the "Boros," who play at the Middlesbrough Football Club and participate in one of the world's most competitive leagues.
