Settled by Irish laborers during the 1800s, the Third Ward was Milwaukee's Little Italy by the 1880s. A fire in 1892 destroyed over 20 square blocks of this manufacturing and warehouse district, but it was quickly rebuilt. Somewhat of an artsy neighborhood today, the Third Ward is quite pedestrian-friendly and is home to a plethora of art galleries, antique shops, specialty stores, and restaurants. Highlights include the Broadway Theater Center, and the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. The best way to get a good feel for this historic neighborhood is to take a guided walking tour.
