DINKYTOWN.   The early bird really does get the worm at Al’s Breakfast in Minneapolis, and late risers should be prepared to honor the system and wait in the rear. Listed as the narrowest restaurant in town, this 10-foot wide Minneapolis MN breakfast joint is far from restricted in the food area. Al’s buttermilk pancakes, waffles, hash browns and omelets have lured in patrons of all descriptions for years, from Gopher-fanatic students and intrigued locals to visitors and even comedian Garrison Keillor.   (© 10Best)

I can't believe I'm the first to rate Al's on this site. Al's is, without question, the best breakfast in the world. I used to eat there three times a week when I lived in Dinkytown and was a grad student at the U. I used to get up early -- like 6:30 a.m. -- just so I could get a walnut waffle and some hot coffee. Best waffle in the world. Cooked before your eyes in an iron over a flame. Served with real maple syrup and a slab of hot butter. Better get there early -- only fourteen seats in the whole joint. Line often snakes outside the place. If you're not willing to get up early to avoid the lines, you don't deserve to eat there anyway. Al's is the best thing about Minneapolis, probably Minnesota.
